Does the chair possess a
consciousness of its own, quietly
observing and deciding who may
wield it?

Is it inherently benevolent, guiding
its occupant toward healing and
revelation, or does it harbor a
darker intent, subtly steering events toward chaos?

Its influence seems deliberate at
times, almost moral in nature—yet
whose morality does it follow?

The Project The Armchair Travellers

Synopsis

In a world where books come alive, the most extraordinary story is not found between the covers – but between the lines.

In 1912, four unmarried women are thrust into a reality where literature is no longer an escape but a minefield. Their quiet lives—shaped by work, friendship, and the fragile hope of something more—are upended by an extraordinary chair with wild magic, sending them into the worlds of the books they love.

Katherine longs for a romance worthy of Jane Austen, but the factory floor offers no Mr. Darcy, only grit and misogyny. Within the Chair's embrace, she lives her own Regency romance—complete with mishaps, mayhem, and a hero too perfect to be real. But every story must end.

Her friends have their own objectives. Charlotte's journey to selflessly help a friend takes her to a turbulent chapter of history, where choices are shaped by sacrifice. Jane, haunted by a buried secret, must confront the one thing she has fled her entire life—even if it demands the ultimate price—only Maria, wary and unyielding, senses danger. After one harrowing encounter with the Chair, she vows to protect her friends from the Chair that only obeys its own rules.

What begins as a miraculous gift becomes a test of human desire. Love and loss, ambition and regret, courage and triumph -- all play out across worlds beyond the written word. As the women chase their deepest wishes, they discover that dreams can come true —but only some come without a price.

A Powerful - Character-Driven Ensemble

KATHERINE

Katherine has chosen the life of a spinster. A die-hard romantic, she spent years dreaming that love might transform her dull routine into something vibrant and worth living. Living between reality and fantasy, she confronts life's disappointments with resilience rather than escape. To her reading club, she is the glue that holds them together. Books are her sanctuary; within their pages, she doesn't just read—she lives, entering worlds where love is fierce and passion feels as real as the air she

CHARLOTTE

Charlotte has it all. Born to a prominent Chicago family, she is rich, pretty, and adventurous—until a scandalous affair with another woman ruins her in society's eyes and brings shame to her family. Promised a substantial inheritance, Charlotte chooses to remain unmarried and instead devotes herself to the fight for women's rights. After a chance meeting with a fellow suffragette whose story stirs deep compassion, she embarks on helping her friend on an unimaginable journey to recover what seems hopelessly lost.

JANE

Jane is Katherine's closest friend, a successful dressmaker with sharp wit and unapologetic honesty. Outwardly unshakable, fashionable, cynical, and fearlessly outspoken, she keeps her private world cloaked in silence. Long ago, the man she loved vanished without a trace, leaving a wound that never healed. Beneath her no-nonsense exterior, a storm of unexamined tragedy brews. When an unexpected chance arises to confront the ghosts of her past, Jane doesn't hesitate—the chair will take her.

MARIA

Maria has chosen her dream of becoming a novelist over marriage and writes for the Chicago Times society page. Sharp-witted, pragmatic, and unflinchingly level-headed, her loyalty to her friends runs deep. She will go to any lengths to protect them, even when it demands difficult choices, especially against an unknown she herself can barely comprehend—the chair.

A Supporting Cast of Consequence.

JOE

Joe, in his 50s, is a purveyor of unique furniture. Those who enter his shop sense that there is more to him than meets the eye. Every object Joe curates holds a story. Katherine finds solace in Joe's presence as a friend and confidante. Katherine wanders through his shop, she stumbles upon a unique chair, and with his customary wisdom, Joe explains the chair's history, "This chair has held the weight of dreams and fears," he says, he winks. "It's a reminder that sometimes, the right place to sit can lead us to the right path."

CORALIE

Coralie has been fighting for her life—and for the lives of others—since the moment she first ran for freedom. Her escape from slavery was just the beginning. She threw herself into the struggle to help others escape the same chains she had broken, working tirelessly with the Underground Railroad. Now, as an influential leader in Chicago's suffragist movement, Coralie's fight has only grown fiercer—against the poison of racism, and for the dignity and rights of all women. Though she has faced unimaginable hardships, including the scars of her past, a lost love, and the ongoing battles against systemic racism, Coralie remains undeterred. She mentors a younger activist, Charlotte, instilling the same fierce determination that fueled her own journey.

WILLIAM

William has been through a lot. He was a fugitive slave during the Civil War, and it was Coralie who helped him escape—crossing the dangerous river in the night to freedom. A quiet man with a smile that could soften the hardest of hearts, William bore the weight of a decision that shattered him to his core. To claim his freedom, he was forced to abandon everything he had ever known, taking a new name and a new identity at the devastating cost of losing the woman he loved. Yet, despite the pain that has never ceased, there remains a quiet strength in him—an unwavering grace that speaks of a soul tempered by hardship and a heart that, even in its sorrow, refuses to grow cold.

CHARLES

Charles is not merely the man of Katherine's dreams; he is the embodiment of everything she has never dared to want. Handsome, tender, and quietly magnetic, he transforms the ordinary into something luminous. In his gaze lives an unsettling clarity, as if he sees the true parts of her she has long kept hiding. Yet loving Charles demands more than longing. He represents a life beyond safety and control, where desire carries consequences and certainty dissolves into risk. Drawn toward him, Kathrine stands at a crossroads—between the life she knows and a love that asks her to surrender comfort for possibility, and fears for becoming fully alive.
